Mediterranean region.

Zones 6-11 (grown as an annual in colder zones).

 

Resistances:
Moderately resistant to drought and pests but susceptible to frost.

 

Growing Conditions:
Full sun, well-drained, fertile soil with regular moisture.

Start indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost or direct seed in warm climates.

 

Growing Tips:
Provide rich soil, consistent watering, and mulch for moisture retention. Vernalization (exposing young plants to cool temperatures) promotes bud formation in the first year.

 

Uses:
Eaten steamed, grilled, or roasted; buds and hearts are culinary delicacies.
