Although We provide specific brand recommendations here we are not endorsed by the following companies. These recommendations are based on experience.

Lights

Are lights necessary?

We get much better growth with lights and they are definately needed if you are growing any fruiting plants. Putting plants in a south facing window is helpful and even sufficient for some plants like regular tropical house plants. But this does not provide enough light for food plants.

Choosing the right bulb

Plant light bulbs can found easily but not all are equal. You don't have to spend alot for good ones, these are all under $10 each. You can start with just one bulb.

  • Look for bulbs that have 800 or more lumens

  • Full spectrum light

  • Will screw into a regular lamp socket

Lamps

You can use any lamp that you have if the plants can be positioned under it. We recommend using a lamp that suits your decor so it doesn't look out of place. We have use all of the following for our indoor garden.

Choose one that will fit a regular sized light bulb and avoid plastic.

Soil

Soil is equally important as light!  Use sterilized soil to avoid issues with pests and mold. We highly recommend Miracle Gro for your indoor plants because they offer a blend to help suppress gnats.

MG soil

Pots

When starting seeds use any recyclable items that will hold some soil, just remember to poke drain holes in the bottom.

Match the container size to the plants size.

Seeds

If this is your first indoor garden try starting with herbs, green onion and lettuce.  When you have mastered those then move onto cucumber and then tomatoes.
